One little year ago today, my husband and I embarked on a new journey, completely unaware how it would affect our day, our days to follow, and our year. We had some folding tables and a roaster and we figured that, as long as we were roasting we could pour some cups and bag some pounds. About six people agreed with us that first day, and I had a lot of extra time to sit in the rocking chair and knit coffee cozies. The first months were slow, but Ty was so happy not to be roasting out of an old warehouse without heat or plumbing! Slowly, and with the help of our presence at the Las Cruces Farmers & Crafts Market, our clientele base grew. More friends than I can count donated items to our space, helped to spread the word and became our cheerleaders. Soon, a micro loan by the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership gave us a leg up and allowed us to hire the fantastic Daniel Aguilera to build some additional counters and tables and some needed equipment. The space transformed, we started hosting community events, and the shop started to feel like home. Soon we hired Lexi as a part-time employee who used to come to the shop so much we finally just offered her a job! Ill call that my greatest moment of brilliance, as she is not only a valued member of our team, shes like a member of our family. Over the past year weve made mistakes - a number of them - and weve gone through some extremely lean and very anxious times. Now, with the first year under our belt we have a frame of reference. Were able to plan and budget. We can roll with the punches a little more easily. We have big ideas for the next year and we have high hopes for the years to follow. Make no mistake about it, our year and the years ahead are ONLY possible because of our friends like you, our friends who take the time to seek out the small, independently owned little shop on Mesquite Street. You are the drivers of our local economy, champions of the mom and pops, the visionaries with great taste in coffee and we thank you. Enjoy your free cup of coffee today - and bring a friend!
