One man’s dream almost costs him his life Surging #property #prices have left heavy loads on many #Chinese people, with thousands being “#house #slaves” - spending half their lifetime repaying mortgages. For one man, however, it proved even more than that. A 45-year-old man attempted #suicide in Zhengzhou, capital of north China’s Henan Province on Tuesday, saying he’d worked all his life – and yet a house remained just a dream. The man, from a city near Zhengzhou, has been working as a maintenance worker for nearly 20 years. Buying a house, however, is still out of his reach. “The four members of my family are living together in a 20-square-meter rented house. My daughter is already 19 years old, and has no other choice but live with us. I couldn’t afford a house and the apartment we rent will be demolished very soon. Everyday, I’m worrying about finding a new house.” The fact is, it’s almost impossible to find a house with payment of 400 RMB (around $65) a month. ” Medical bills are now the major concern of the family. 1,000 RMB (around $160), is all that the family have in savings, which is not enough to pay for his treatment. His story has triggered a big online debate on Sina Weibo. “I can completely understand his feeling. If you haven’t got a well-paid job in Zhengzhou, you cannot afford to buy a house even with 30 years’ hard working.”@YaboAllen “Weak people deserve sympathy, but the society is moving forward. If everyone is weak in China, how could the country become powerful? A poor person must be hateful in some aspects.” @Zhishengdanlei “Where can I get thousands of big broad shelters, with huge roof that all poor people in the world can share happily?(Verses by Du Fu, a famous poet in ancient China’s Tang Dynasty)1300 years have passed, yet the situation remains the same. @Dapengkantianxia
