One mistake many critics of the Bible make is to assume the English versions we have today are a product of a string of interpretations over the years. They often use the analogy of the old telephone game where you whisper to your neighbor and they repeat it to their neighbor, and it goes on until the last person receives the message. When the last person reveals the message they received, it is usually totally different from the original. This could not be farther from an accurate depiction of how we received our modern English translations. The modern versions are largely translated from the same old text that others have been translated from, with time often given to the other translations as a check and balance. It is more complex than this, but you get the idea. Please do not fall for the old, The Bible has been copied and changed hundreds of times down through the ages, accusation!
