One more story when growing up in Spfd..... We had a pretty big yard from 2 lots combined. My Dad had 2 huge gardens and grew everything from Asparagus to Zucchini. So needless to say, we also had a lot of critters around as in; squirrels, birds, rabbits, gophers etc. My Dad had ongoing battles w/ the squirrels for eating the gardens & gophers for digging holes in the yard. (another story) I had my own challenge of trying to catch a rabbit. No matter how quiet I was, I could not get close enough to ever touch one much less to catch one. I came up w/ a plan tho which I was sure would work. I got the longest piece of string (about 12-15 ft) and tied a carrot to the end of it. I left the carrot under a pink Dogwood Tree on the right front side of our house where I had last seen a rabbit. My plan was to hide behind some bushes w/ one end of the string and once a rabbit found the carrot & started eating it...I would slowly...very, very slowly pull the string towards me and grab the rabbit. Needless to say I sat out there for a long time waiting for that rabbit or any rabbit to appear. I cant remember except it got dark.....I would have to try something else another day. I still like rabbits and was very touched to see my nephew chasing some rabbits a few years back. Turns out he likes them too....which to me is very cool!!
