One need not die first to receive a tribute. This is for a brave and courageous survivor.... A canine with a BELCINA spirit! Tokimonsta A cute bundle of shiny and velvety black Labrador curled peacefully in his sleep. He came to our lives as a gift from a dear friend of mine. We do not have extra budget for another mouth to feed as we even have to strive for our daily needs especially food. However, the mere sight of the present delighted our simple hearts for we saw not with our eyes but our hearts… he was as bright as the sunshine in the morning. It was 7:00. He crawled and sniffed under the tables and chairs, made a roundabout before retiring in his new bed. It was made of newly laundered used clothes, stuffed inside a small box. Welcome to your new home, puppy… I want to call him with a name that is totally his personality and suddenly it came to me that like the picture of the dog in the UP Diliman jeepney that goes both ways, TOKI and IKOT, I will name him TOKI.. It sounded nice and sounded like the food usually served in the street corner—Maki. Ah, I will call you Tokimaki! As an artists, I named him Tokimonsta so his name will ring a bell! As Tokimonsta grows, I enjoyed watching him lying flat face up on the ceiling, in front of our electric fan. He loves the wind that blows his fluffy fur like the leaves of the nearby mahogany tree. Soon He was introduced to my friends.. the longboarders of Manila. I sometimes bring him along with me during our practice in Fairview and saw him enjoying a lot watching my barkada swish and swoosh in midair! He is not alone though for Tokimonsta met a white Labrador just near our house and instantly became best buds! Of course, he should be! They are dogs! They speak the same language and go around catching their waggling tails! And then there’s another member, MimitKremin! The black and white cat who used to be the sole pet in the house.. He was envious when Tokimonsta came to be another member of the family but was instantly charmed by Tokimaki’s antics and sweetness. I always look forward to returning home everyday from work expecting Tokimonstas wide grin and waggling tail.. His countless jumps that only ends when I scoop him and give him a warm big hug! Then one day he did not meet me as he usually does. He was just on the floor, his ears and eyes down. I thought he was just tired so I came to him, patted him on the head.. Then another two days and he was the same.. I was busy I did not bother nor thought that he might be sick.. I was shocked when I saw him vomiting with blood! I carried him and went immediately to the veterinary clinic. He was so weak, he cannot even complain how things have gone fast! They put dextrose and got samples for examination. My Strong And playful Tokimonstah had leptospirosis, a disease that kills animals and people. Then it dawned on me that he liked to play in the water and our place is always flooded… God, please help my Tokimaki survive! The vets said the disease has already destroyed his kidney.. his eyes are turning yellowish now.. he can just look at me with his drooping eyes… not any other move.. he was too weak… He needed medications and I do not have that thousands and thousands for his treatment. Luckily, my brothers, sisters and friends all contributed for his medications. He was given until Wednesday, October 1, 2014 or else I have to prepare myself for the worst. Tokimonsta is a survivor! I know it in my heart. He loves life so much that I saw him fight the disease, I saw him tried his best to look at me everytime I visit him.. Then the day arrived and Tokimonsta is still alive! The doctors said he was such a brave dog! He fought and fought hard for more than a week. He conquered! Well, his friends, the white Labrador and Mimitkremin missed him. The white dog always checks on his favorite spot outside our home, and MimitKremin, the house cat always stays in his place… waiting.. maybe for Tokimaki to return home at any time of the day and they hate it when they are not there when that time comes… hopefully.. When Tokimonsta arrived, the animal friends were there! maybe they knew today he would come.. friends really do communicate with their hearts.. They jumped as if wanting to play around but Tokimaki was still weak.. he just looked at them and stayed in this favorite spot… His eyes are twinkling now… gone are the dull and weak eyes… Hurray! Tokimonsta still needs to maintain his medication and I was already financially drained out, not to mention my financial obligations when I borrowed money to complete his medications. I decided to post in my facebook account: “Tokimonsta the Survivor”… a fund raising activity with my friends… and Tokimonstas friends, too!... we sold snacks and food items and all proceeds will be for our Friend! We have raised enough money for his continued check-up and medication and I am grateful for all the help and the concern for my beloved dog. Well, I did mention Tokimonsta a.k.a Tokimaki is a dog? A black shiny Labrador.. But he is no ordinary dog nor is he a mere house pet, he is our family and to my skater friends, he is their friend, too! So what and who is Tokimaki? He is ......OUR FRIEND…..
