One of 80 Bat Boxes commissioned by NPWS for Cranbrook nature - TopicsExpress

One of 80 Bat Boxes commissioned by NPWS for Cranbrook nature reserve. This follows on the success from 150 installed 2 yrs ago in Scheyville NP. Why Bat boxes? It takes from 80 to 100 yrs for Trees to develop cavities that provide habitat.Few areas in Cumberland plains forest are this old having been logged many yrs ago.Micro bats of which there are about 13 local species need hollows to roost during the day and to breed in . Without Bats and Birds forests die .They are a critical part of the environment. Some of the boxes installed in the NP 2 yrs ago have been used by feather glider possums to raise families. So soon 20 boxes for this species are to be built and installed before spring along with a number of boxes for Barn owls. Why are the boxes numbered???? Well how else to they get their Batmail delivered. "if you built it ...they will come"
