One of North Carolinas icons in the band world is in failing health. Not only is Ed Rooker a wonderful music educator and clarinet player, he continues to be one of the nicest men Ive ever known. When I was voted into ASBDA, Ed was one of my very vocal supporters. He has judged my band on numerous occasion, and each time would find a way to make it an educational experience for me and for my kids. At UNCG Summer Music Camp, he was always a father figure to Joanna, me and so many others. Advice was always free…and so valuable….and always included his comforting smile. The SMC Red Band was a Ed Rooker tradition…and he wore is Red Band cap and t-shirt with much excitement and pride. The kids LOVED being in Mr. Rookers band. Ill forever remember his buttons with photos of his grandchildren that he wore on his chest with pride at all times. And his homemade wooden Ed Rooker Batons…..guaranteed to get a superior…..I have at least 5 in my baton case right now. Priceless! My heart is heavy for him and his battle with cancer. My prayers are with him, his lovely wife Vera, and their family. May he be in peace and have the realization of how many students, colleagues and friends he has touched throughout his wonderful life. God bless Ed Rooker!
