One of my boys just called a bigger girl a pig in front of the whole class and nobody even thought about challenging him. I sent the boy to the back of the class for a time out. To my co-teachers credit, she spoke to the boy afterward. This happens so often and the sad part is that the kids being put down just accepts it as their identity. I see no protest in their eyes as someone who continuously reads up on shame, I recognize it when I see it. I fear for some of my students cause they have internalized their labels.
