One of my dearest friends, Kevin Monko, has put together an incredible rock review here in Philadelphia. Kevin and I have been working together as photographers for over 25 years, but he’s also an amazingly talented musician and has the personality and smarts to draw talented people to him to produce something beautiful. It’s a Glam Rock show called Candy Volcano. They played tons of David Bowie and Lou Reed and Mott the Hoople and all of that. It was amazing fun. For the finale (All the Young Dudes) there were nearly 30 people on stage and Kevin is the brains behind all of it. (They performed on the World Café stage which is a nationally recognized venue here in Philadelphia. You’ve probably heard their radio show on Public Radio.) Every single one of these people could sing. They took turns sharing the lead microphone and it was quite amazing as the drummer and the sax player and the keyboard person all stepped up to the front and sang a classic rock hit. Many of the people in this review are among Philadelphia’s most talented rock musicians. I concentrated on photographing the individual performers and posted them on Dropbox so they could all download them and do whatever they want with them. The photographs are nothing fancy. They are simple performance photographs. But I have to say, I was very impressed with the way the Samsung NX30 behaved on autofocus and auto exposure at ISO 1600. I set the auto-exposure function to take the reading off of the focusing square to make life easy for me. I wasn’t quite sure how well it would work but I just kept taking one properly exposed, in-focus picture after another. It was about my most successful attempt at performance photographs ever. So I’m just posting some samples here to celebrate Kevin’s achievement. The love these musicians demonstrated for Kevin was oozing off the stage. I’m so proud he’s my friend.
