One of my greatest joys has been the opportunity over the years to watch the De La Salle alumni become a family. This past Tuesday we had a reunion of the alums who are currently in high school at our new home on 43rd Street. The turnout was huge! The love and excitement of being together again was palpable. What makes me feel so proud is that the vast majority of them are in leadership positions at their schools. They have taken their experience of community at De La Salle and have tried to create the same in another environment and culture. They share with me their frustrations when many of the students at their schools seem to be concerned only with themselves. Being around peers who always have money, lots of money, and the “status things” yet are oblivious to the plight of so many children in the city upsets them deeply. These peers have not suffered any material wants. Selfishness and self-centeredness have taken hold of them. However, the De La Salle alumni become reality agents and educate their peers through example and a powerful humility that speaks to character. The De La Salle alumni have taken on the mission of trying to make a difference in the world. They walk with a confidence built on the experience they received here in community. They acknowledge and accept that the gifts that God gave them are unique to them. With those God-given gifts, they become agents of change and make a difference. De La Salle will always be in their hearts and minds.
