One of my more memorable evenings during the M&P years was the night before Frank South left NYC for Hollywood. I was alone at the theatre, watching a marathon of that tv series in which Richard Chamberlain played an English samurai. Can’t remember the title, though I had read the book by James Clavell. (Clavell did some wonderful things in it. By the use of pure syntax, he managed to convey whether his characters were speaking English, Latin, or Japanese.) Frank called to say goodbye. I think he was a little drunk. I don’t remember what we talked about, but we talked for hours. Our conversation must have been almost as long as the tv series. I think he was a little scared of going to Hollywood, and regretful about leaving NYC. But it was an enjoyable few hours. (Frank, I never did catch up with SNAKES IN A WATER COOLER, though I kept hearing about it.) Frank went on to write for a tv series (Was it Beverly Hills 90210? And later became the story editor. And when he brough his one-man show to the Santa Monica Playhouse, Terri Price happened to be in LA. The two of us went to see his show, which centered on his experiences with attention deficit disorder, and it told me things I never knew about Frank. We’d hoped to go for coffee with him after the show, but he had other friends there. Anyway, Frank, keep us informed of what you’re up to, and how things are going.
