One of my part time jobs during my days off was driving a bus for Chieppo Bus Company, then located on Forbes Avenue. One Saturday morning in the early 70s, Hillhouse High School ordered 2 buses. One to take the football team and the other to transport the cheerleaders to a football game in Bristol, CT. I got the pretty cheerleaders and the other bus driver got the football team with all their equipment. I lucked out. We arrived at the football field in Bristol at about 11:00 AM. Some of our cheerleaders did not have uniforms and some had mismatched uniforms but all had the pom-poms. The football team all had the proper uniforms. They walked in the back gate with no trouble. As soon as our girls tried to enter the field they were stopped and questioned about their uniforms or lack of uniforms. Then some idiot decided to charge all the Hillhouse girls admission to enter the field. I stepped up and said that I am their bus driver. They are all Hillhouse cheerleaders. Ive transported many ball teams to games and never did a cheerleader have to pay admission to the field. I asked if a policeman was on duty and they called for him. I very seldom took out my badge but when he arrived, I showed my badge and introduced myself as a brother policeman from New Haven and stood up for the girls and vouched that they were all Hillhouse cheerleaders. I told the Officer that these gate people wanted to charge them admission. Which one wanted to charge admission, he asked? No one answered. He let all the girls in and promised me that they would not be harassed. I felt that it was the right thing to do. Not only did Hillhouse beat this lilly white football team. Did I say that?, but our cheerleaders were prettier and did a much better job cheerleading. I didnt let the girls see my policemans badge. They just thought that I was someone important. :-)
