One of my sweet readers posted an interesting question that some of you may be asking as you read todays post. She asked, What is the reason behind not wearing linen or white before Easter or after Labor Day? This is one of those style statutes associated with the old school of fashion, but I still adhere to many of those principles, and here is why: The reason linen is not worn past Labor Day is because it is a summer fabric. Linen is a loose weave fabric designed to be breathable in hot weather; therefore it is not suited for colder climates and is not used in fall or winter. White is a more traditional statute of etiquette. Here is a good article explaining why: content.time/time/nation/article/0,8599,1920684,00.html. I adhere to most of the classic principles of etiquette (what our grandmothers would probably purport). One of the reasons I do this is because classic etiquette transcends both time and social class. A good example of this was when I worked as nanny for an extremely wealthy family. Because I was trained in classic etiquette and style, I easily transitioned from my middle class background to the company of millionaires at the country club I was to attend. The original definition of the word ‘classy’ is associated with wealth and status. A woman with ‘class’ maintains grace, poise, and timeless style that enables her to communicate with ALL social classes.
