One of my tremendous obsessions since Christmas…OHalloran is one - TopicsExpress

One of my tremendous obsessions since Christmas…OHalloran is one of the best known unknowns who has actually become a significant figure in the realm of Contemporary Classical Music and who has scored over a dozen films to great acclaim…Self-taght, he has drawn on array of sources that include stage, cinema, television, popular ballads of the 19th c, and even antique music boxes...Their is a great delicacy in his work that is never precious, and a strange, remote nostalgia that is never sentimental…and an eerie, elusive familiarity…..I read something strongly American in his work…or maybe almost Americana…but in the saddest, most doleful way, wind-grieved perhaps…When I hear this piece I see a massive, ancient scrapbook of photographs discovered buried in an attic, but with the crucial text pages having crumbled away, and the pictures unlabeled, so there is a maddening silence to these frozen moments until you give them a more careful, unhurried gaze, and listen with your eyes to their long-ago stories…It is the kind of music that should be played in abandoned, sealed up old houses that are spookily intact, with deteriorating rooms that still hold things that someone clearly valued and meant to come back for, but never did. That is where OHallorans brings you. That place.
