One of our friend seeing the Summer Solstice post sent couple of days back enquired about the mathematical curiosities behind the date which is 21st June. Triangular numbers are numbers which are sum of consecutive positive integers. 1 = 1 is the first triangular number and 3 = 1+2 is the second triangular number. The month number for June is 6 (=1+2+3) which is third triangular number and 21 (=1+2+3+4+5+6) is the 6th triangular number. Thus the date and month are both triangular numbers and the date represent the triangular number index of the month. Pie Mathematics Association.
