One of our greatest ever singers just recently passed and the MOBOs hadnt seen it fit to recognise this in any way. John Holt has been through all the major phases of Jamaican popular music from Ska, to Rock Steady, to Roots, to Lovers Rock & Dancehall and even influenced certain aspects of Pop (check Blondie with Tide Is High written by John Holt). In case you did not know, Wear you To The Ball was one of the earliest successful collaborations of an MC (DJ in old money), i.e. U Roy, and a straight vocal performance, i.e. John Holt as lead singer of the Paragons. Wear You To The Ball was released in 1967, almost 50 years ago and the concept of MCs collaborating with Singers still continues to this day. These days you can hardly release a single without an 8 or 16 bar from an MC coming in to spice up the track. Come on now MOBOs. I know from my own experience that putting on an awards show is no easy task, but here is an excellent opportunity to educate people about where current music trends really orginated from. For us old fogies who lived through the era of sound systems, blues dances, and original pirate radio stations, we are witnessing aspects of our culture disappearing before our very eyes. If you call yourself, the Music Of Black Origin, then you really have a duty to tell it like it is. We all know you need the corporate money to make the thing happen, but right now its not looking like anything we originally experienced when we had NO legal platform to express our music. Our heroes and heroines are passing and our music and culture just seems to be passing with them. JUST SAYING
