One of the 1st traits to look for when trying to spot a false teacher is: Whats the Source of his teaching—Where does the message come from? Peter says, We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:16). And then he says the false teachers exploit you with stories they have made up (2 Peter 2:1-3). The true teachers source is what he says from the Bible. The false teacher relies on his own creativity. He makes up his own message. This doesnt mean he doesnt use dictionaries, commentaries and historical books. It only means his main source is scripture. For instance, I can give you an overwhelming amount of scripture that says plainly, we as believers should keep the 7th day Sabbath. A teacher who is in error will tell you that you can keep the 1st day of the week as your Sabbath of rest. However, he can never provide you with a scriptures that says so.
