One of the best movie (2013) to watch. Set in pre civil war years in the US. Steve McQueen has put together on screen a true account of a New York black American Solomon Northup who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. The movie successfully potrayed the despised human racism of the highest order. When one of the abolishenist white (Brad Pitt) asked a slave owner how do you see the difference between us and them?. The answer given.. the difference between a human and a baboon... When a woman slave was given lashes for going out for a cake of soap without asking leave, Solomon begged the slave owner to stop for it is a sinful act. The slave owner shot back. There is no sin.. because you treat your property as you wish. For every sunday he gathers the slaves and read out passages from the bible testifying that negroes are properties as ordained by God. Saya teringat tulisan Ust Hasrizal. Inilah yg menyebabkan penghayatan sejarah di negara barat amat menarek kerana ia membicarakan sejarah rakyat-sejarah akar umbi masyarakat. Bukan sejarah memaparkan tokoh dan bangsa yg diangkat angkat. The movie was an art drama but has already collected usd100 million. (Theres no scene of epic battles with hundreds of extras that would have been costly to produce). A prove that it is the idea that sells and not so much of dramatic action scenes. I watch this movie on Oman Air en route to Muscat in our Misi3 I4S-Aqsa Syarif mission to Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
