One of the citys oldest festas, Sant Roc has been celebrated since - TopicsExpress

One of the citys oldest festas, Sant Roc has been celebrated since 1589, when Sant Roc was named patron saint of the city. Events take place in Pl. Nova, outside the cathedral and retain plenty of centuries-old traditions such as the gégants dance, sardanes, castellers and a correfoc. Legend has is that Sant Roc had to stay beyond the city walls because of the plague. He survived thanks to a bakers dog who would bring him a panellet (a sweet pastry) every day. The dog is celebrated in the Festa del Gos (Dog Festival) and panellets are served up to party goers, to be washed down with wine from the porró-llarg (a glass wine server from 1830). This is a family-friendly festival and one of the highlights are the traditional childrens games (la cucanya) which kids can come and try their hand at. barcelona-metropolitan/events/sant-roc-festival/
