One of the defining moments of my musical education took place in 1981 when Derek Bailey brought his Company Week to NYC. Derek would walk out onto the stage and spontaneously create groupings of masters of free improv like Peter Brotzmann, Joelle Leandre and Fred Frith to play with up-and-coming young people like John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Tom Cora, Christian Marclay and Keshavan Maslak. It took the top of my head off, and defined what I’d be hearing for decades to come. This saturday night 6PM to 11PM, at Real Art Ways in Hartford, Stephen Haynes and Joe Morris will be extending this tradition, bringing in a cast of 17, a mixture of experience and youth, to create music wholly in the moment. Don’t miss this! , It may just define what YOU will be hearing in the future.
