One of the giants-still working, by the way, now with Tony Bennett--who we have not gotten around to mentioning yet--is the great Harold Jones. Though best known for really firing up the Basie Band from 1967 until 1972--when some firing was needed--his work with vocalists like Bennett, 10 years with Sarah Vaughan, and stints with just about every other jazz singer of note is way beyond tasteful and worthy of study for anyone who has ever backed a singer. And hes a beautiful cat as well.
