One of the great tragedies of the relative obscurity art music has fallen into since the mid-twentieth century has been that many of our finest musicians -- who deserve to be revered as much as the Great Dead Composers that populate the programs of most concert halls and the playlists of most classical music stations -- dont have the audience they deserve. I learned about Phil Glass through a video game soundtrack, of all places. Ive since fallen madly in love with him. More recently, though, Ive rediscovered his opera Satyagraha, a historical epic sung in Sanskrit based on the life of Gandhi which, played properly, leaks grandiosity and spiritual power out of every pore. Id listened to it before with total indifference; but hearing it again tonight, I was profoundly moved. The second act in particular stands out. (So yes, Julian Bass-Krueger, you were right.) https://youtube/watch?v=sR7hcLwFaNw
