One of the greatest books you will ever own. Ask anyone who has bought it. The Path by Danielle Sainte-Marie He wore a green hat while looking for a way, and he saw a sign pointing to “The Path,” so he made a slight shift of mind, and found he was at its entrance. And before him was a road, well-traveled and beguiling, with amazing views, dropping hints, of a mirror like sky and cantaloupe leaves. And as he stood there glimpsing, three more joined him: two men in hats brown and yellow —and one woman with no hat— and they all stood side by side. The man with the green hat said, “I am contemplating this path and I think I shall travel down it, even if I am not sure that I shall return.” The man with the brown hat said, “I see no reason to travel the path. This view is already good enough for me, so I think I will just set up camp here, at the entrance.” The man with the yellow hat said, “I don’t understand why there is a path. I reject it and want to go back to my life.” Suddenly, he turned into a dog and went wagging happily away. The woman just remained silent, as though she were intent on listening. So, the man with the green hat started down the trail. The man with the brown hat set up camp. And, the man with the yellow hat, well, he barked somewhere far off in the distance. The man with the brown hat lived a long life and always enjoyed the views the path offered, but he never got to witness anymore than immediacy. And, one day he died, with a bit of regret for not following further. The man with the green hat enjoyed the views… and oh, what wondrous, prodigious sights he studied! Each day was a new, gratifying step on the path! The path spiraled on and on, and many years of solace and diversion had he— but one day the path began to change. He noticed it was less worn as he continued. Eventually, he was walking along in new soil, and the things he saw can never be described— or written about, for language does not do them justice. And he came to an end, and as he stepped through the other side— into blinding light, he saw he was back at the entrance. And there was the man with the brown hat, dead and he was lying next to the dog still in his yellow hat, also dead…. And there stood the same woman, unaged. Aloud to her, Green Hat said, “I see now that no matter which road we choose we all end up the same. The difference though, is in the views along the way. For I have not had a dog’s life, nor did I lay down roots at the entrance to the path. I had a good, full life, and here I am, fulfilled. But, woman there you are, you have not traveled any path at all! You have stood there this whole time, I presume. Why, dear woman…weren’t you ever curious to walk the path?” The woman simply said, “My dear man, the path to walk is for you and your friends. As for I, I already know it very well. You see, the path was designed by me, and came out of my womb. I am the path; I give forms, and I take them away.” And with that, the men vanished into stories, but the woman remained.
