One of the hardest early lessons that I learned was to discover that I was a member of a privileged demographic; in this case – a religious group. When I finally understood that there was no rational reason for the religious belief, and hence no reason why the group should be privileged, it freed me to reject my other demographic privileges of being white, male and British. Rejecting religion freed me to respect people equally, regardless of race, colour or gender.
