One of the largest gold cargo, lost at sea, is finally going to be hauled up after 157 years. In 1857, the SS Central America shipwrecked 160 miles off the cost of South Carolina. It was carrying, what was valued in 1857, between $250,000 and $1.28 million of gold. The shipwreck was discovered in 1987 and from that day until this year, legal battles prevented and work from being done to retrieve the goods. I cannot imagine what the value of this haul is today.
