One of the most beautiful places to fish in the Seattle area is the Duwamish River, which runs through King County... until you get near its drainage into Puget Sound. The place where Bill Boeing built his planes for decades. The odd thing, is that Seattle-ites dont even realise its a Super Fund clean up site. Its so toxic with all the heavy metals which are by-products of aluminum smelting/welding, it will literally -never- be cleaned up. And the even odder thing is that Boeing has been in court with the EPA and the state of WA for -decades- to get out of paying clean-up costs. They argue and argue and argue.... and they havent even begun cleaning things up. Its been over twenty years. And they havent really -started-. The river is so pretty and pastoral on top. Beavers. Birds. But about 10 feet down in the muck? Cadmium. PCBs. PBAs. PBBs. The kind of filth that doesnt just give ya cancer and make yer testicles shrink. It screws with yer DNA and then gives yer -kid- cancer and shrunken testicles. There is this odd love/hate relationship with Boeing that Im sure is common to lots of one-industry towns. Seattle-ites talk about all the environment stuff... but Boeing -is- the evil empire. And yet they not only get a pass. Its as if they have this invisibility cloak. People dont even notice. IOW: if any other company committed these crimes thered be hell to pay. But still, Boeing has a really great image with most of the public. It wouldnt bug me so much if they werent so brazen. Or rather, if my fellow citizens didnt treat them like Uncle Ernie... Oh he isnt a -bad- guy... he just makes mistakes sometimes.
