One of the most brilliant lyrics ever written. Leonard Cohens - TopicsExpress

One of the most brilliant lyrics ever written. Leonard Cohens theology is unique. Its mixture of Christian and Jewish motifs make it fascinating. Its not possible to understand it without having thought deeply on these matters. There are interesting references to the Sefirot in Kabbalah: the circle of Splendor, for example, in the Arms of the High Holy One. He dreams of a letters death is a shocking juxtaposition of birth and death, creation and destruction echoed in many of his songs including Show Me The Place where the womb and the Cross are one. The idea at the heart of the song is, Oh bless the continuous stutter of the Word being made into flesh. Revelation will never cease and ownership of it is, by definition, overstepping Gods power to reveal Himself. It is His choice and must remain so, not ours. This is not syncretism. This is not avoidance through mixture. And never has a religious thinker been so popular among the young without once getting himself dirty (a rabbinic pun of mine, intended) with self-regard or any kind of negativity or harsh feeling. This is a wonderful live version. The recorded version is equally good.
