One of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters - TopicsExpress

One of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters in the world history, the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989. Immediate effects included the deaths of 100,000 to as many as 250,000 seabirds, at least 2,800 sea otters, approximately 300 harbor seals, 250 bald eagles, 22 killer whales, and billions of salmon and herring eggs were destroyed with the initial exposure. Well, that may sound really heinous at that time but even after 25 years from this disaster, though the oil has mostly disappeared from view, many Alaskan beaches remain polluted to this day, crude oil buried just inches below the surface. Now, to recover from this major disaster, a safety minute concept was introduced after Exxon Valdez oil spill in which personnel had to state a safety issue every time they met for a meeting in order to avoid minor accidents to eliminate the risk of major accidents which was later adopted by most of the companies. And in this case, the minor accident was that the captain of Exxon Valdez was drunk that to led to a major oil spill of nearly 11 million gallons of oil. Go figure!
