One of the most useless statistical feats in vogue today, occurred - TopicsExpress

One of the most useless statistical feats in vogue today, occurred last evening in the Red Sox-Cleveland game. Shaw came on in the eighth to protect Mastersons three-run lead and promptly was tagged for two runs in 2/3 of an inning. For this stellar achievement, Mr. Shaw was credited with a Hold. Get this: Hypothetical situation: Jon Lester hurls 7 shutout innings and departs with a two-run lead. Dan Woods comes on to protect the precarious lead. Dan faces just one hitter, James Loney of the Tampa Bay Rays. Dan throws only one pitch which is summarily deposited 550 feet over the right center field fence, one of the longest drives in major league history. Dan is relieved (both literally and figuratively) as Farrell gives him the hook. Tazawa retires three hitters in the eighth and Uehara closes it out. Incredibly, Dan Woods gets the cherished hold. Oh, for the record, I believe that Dan is indeed, capable of this feat, however, Im willing to bet that I, Scott Russell, can throw a baseball a longer distance than a mere 550 feet.
