One of the questions Im asked in the community is what are you going to do about vacant buildings? Commercial vacancies occur throughout town, as do residential vacancies. Most fill through basic marketing, but some are chronically vacant- mainly do to low maintenance, unrealistic price expectations or non-local ownership. Today, the City of Emporia Kansas took its first meaningful step in combating chronically vacant properties by putting a framework together that helps properties improve and encourages property owners to actively fill vacancies. Im proud to live in a community that works to find solutions to problems (several communities have already asked for a copy of the ordinance), and Im very proud of Hilary Becker, who, as a college intern from Emporia State University, did much of the research that resulted in the final form of the local legislation. Even before graduation, she has helped create a framework that will potentially be used all over the nation.
