One of the reasons Im done with politics is that Ive realized Im an elitist out of touch with the ordinary folk. And as an elitist, Ive given up meat, as Ive said. Tonight, for example, Ive had mixed nuts and Ill have a few slices of a Paul Newman cheese pizza with sliced veggies I bought at Publix. I dont drive a Volvo (yet) but I do prefer dry red wine (and Stella). Its not entirely clear to me how I came to be an elitist. Im the grandson of a West Virginia coal miner and timber cutter, a part-time school marm, and two folks who immigrated from Russia and Romania as teens in the early twentieth century to escape persecution for being, you know, Jewish. My dad was a business man who earned every penny he ever had. My mom was a registered nurse. Ive earned every penny Ive ever had. Im not a member of any driving clubs or country clubs. I went to public schools, including North Habersham High School in Clarkesville. I finished at UGA for undergraduate school and law school. But somehow, sometime I caught elitism. It must have been in the air or something. But I do have it, and I think its like malaria. You cant ever get rid of it completely. So Im quarantining myself voluntarily. If youve had contact with me, you might want to check yourself for elitism.
