One of the savviest management consultants I know once said to me - TopicsExpress

One of the savviest management consultants I know once said to me that PR is set up to fail. I know what he was getting at. This morning I saw an exchange of FB posts that demonstrated the ease with which a good intention can have a negative, if unintended, consequence that leaves a bad taste, quite understandably, in various mouths. Ah . . . No good deed goes unpunished. The administrator solicited Good News that could be web-sited about the faculty. But when what ought to have been The Most Important News Story got plowed under a story of putatively lesser importance, it caused that very worst feeling: resentment. And so, when a certain administrator made a few announcements of the newsworthy accomplishments of the faculty, the top-of-the-page announcement ought to have been the appointment of a rock-star faculty member to a prestigious statewide board of advisors. Well, that should have been the headline . . . but it wasnt. The headline was about my book -- which is due out in November. In PR -- and the PR of everything and everyone -- no one gets what they deserve. The world is not planned and thoughtful and kind, but random and counter-intuitive and contingent.
