One of the things I find most interesting about learning about Unschooling has been the philosophical effects on my life. I have a solid mission in my life to live freely and lovingly amongst people of all types of beliefs and actions. I believe that living in a paradigm of freedom allows for people to express themselves as they wish, so long as they do not begin to bump into the freedoms of others, in which case I will take a stand if required. In this base assumption that everyone should live freely, it makes room for people to make choices I would never, in a million years, dream of making. I can feel repulsed at the thought of making the choice. But it also paves the way for me to celebrate humanity and the fact that that person has decided to make that choice as I uphold freedom by upholding that persons right to make that choice. The other side of that coin, however, is that I have choices to make too. If a person is expressing themselves in ways in which I cannot handle, I have the freedom to disassociate myself. If a person is behaving in ways that bump into someone elses freedom, then I have an obligation to ask that other person if they require assistance in getting their freedom-space back, if you will. And if so, I will gladly assist. These are the assumptions anyway. I dont always succeed.There was a guy smoking outside of the building I work in. The campus is a non-smoking campus. I failed at asking him to go off campus to smoke. In this case, he was violating both the campus rules and my desire to not inhale that type of smoke when possible. Regardless, having all of these base assumptions has really provided an amazing foundation of interaction and method and tools for me to be able to redirect emotional responses into productive activity when needed. Im learning, faster and faster, how to re-route my emotional reactions into a nod of gratitude for being free to make the choices I am free to make. This allows for me to experience love for humanity on an amazingly deep level. It allows me the space to love, at a distance, those who are completely different than me. And in some cases, to love them with no distance at all. Yay For Humanity and Freedom.
