One of the welcome surprises from the Bitterns in Rice Project was the discovery of several Eastern Grass Owls roosting in the rice crops earlier this year. In NSW, these threatened, ground-nesting owls are normally only found on the north coast. They are darker than Barn Owls and their long, trailing legs are obvious in fight. Thanks to Andrew Silcocks from Birdlife Australia for these photos of one of the owls after we flushed it from a rice crop.
