One student asked: “First issue for you to sort out. Why are none of Zimbabwes engineering degrees non-accredited internationally? I recently found out that before I apply for school or a job outside of Zim, or membership of ICE, IStructE or any other international engineering organization I have to sit for an academic assessment to see if I qualify, whereas countries like SA that are part of the Washington Accord are not. Why doesnt my membership of ZIE mean anything? When will our qualifications be internationally recognized? Thanks in advance.” The response was as follows from the ZIE CEO: The Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers has no accreditation agreement for engineering degrees or technician diplomas, neither with ICE nor with IStructE. However, Zimbabwean Engineers and Technicians who apply for membership to these Institutions have to sit their respective examinations. At the present moment there are many Zimbabwean Engineers and Technicians who are members of these two Institutions and numerous other international bodies, solely on the merit of their Zimbabwean engineering qualifications. Zimbabwe is not a member of neither the Washington Accord which is a relatively an exclusive club for rich countries that regulate Engineers, the Dublin accord regulating Technicians and the Bologna accord regulating Technologists. In the whole of Africa, South Africa is the only country member of these various accords. ZIE is not a member of any international agreement of the kind at the moment. Notwithstanding the foregoing, there are a multitude of Zimbabwean Engineers and Technicians who are working in South Africa, UK and the rest of Europe, the US and many other African countries. The route to achieve this is simply to be compliant with your home regulations and also register with the local Engineering bodies. For the purpose, the membership to ZIE and subsequent licensing by ECZ are of paramount importance for any Zimbabwean who is preparing to practice the engineering profession both at home and abroad.
