One thing that I really appreciate about Canadian news (vs. American news) is that when something like this happens, they interview people who are actually experts as opposed to just loud people with opinions. The really grating thing about American news is that for every sensible position they present, they have to bring in someone with the exact opposite view for balance, as if actors or talk show hosts have the same credibility when talking about religious radicialisation as someone with a degree in the sociology of religion whose field of expertise is actually religious radicialisation. (Or: lawyer vs. biologist on evolution; theologian vs. archaeologist on history; actress vs. immunologist on vaccination; PR spokesperson for oil companies vs. climatologist on anthropogenic climate change; mystic vs. physicist on physics. These are actual instances of balance Ive witnessed on American TV.) If you want to see a short news segment on a complex topic done right, watch this clip from the CBC (thats the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) with Amarnath Amarasingam.
