One time when I was working on Fashion Police, I showed up early and we were talking in Joans kitchen. Shed just gotten back from England where one of her very dear friends, half of a gay couple, had died. He was in his 70s. Well, you couldnt say he went too soon. She said, knowing he was a good five years younger than she was. She then talked for about 10 minutes about the strange process of having everyone you know die, about living so long that the people you love disappear, and you cant question the justice of it, because it was natural. It was a chilling and strange moment from a woman whod lived too much in the public eye for all of us watching to not realize the weight behind what she was saying. Then she said Well, at least Ill save on Christmas cards this year, and put her purse away.
