One way to share our malasakit with Yolanda victims is to ensure their loss doesnt go in vain. Let this tragedy be a wake-up call for all of us. Let us reflect on the lessons we all need to learn as leaders to be better prepared for the next super-typhoon to hit our country, our organizations, our loved ones. This weeks post is dedicated to Yolanda victims: What do former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani, NJ governor Chris Christie, and former US president George W. Bush have in common? All three faced a crisis that defined their legacy. Rudy Giuliani led NYC through the aftermath of 9/11. How did he fare? Time magazine named Rudy Giuliani as the person of the year for 2001. NJ governor Chris Christie led his state through super-storm Sandy, the strongest and the deadliest hurricane in 2012. How did he fare? He, a Republican, won a second gubernatorial term with an unprecedented 22% margin in a predominantly democratic state. President Bush faced hurricane Katrina, the strongest storm in 2005 and one of the costliest storms in US history. How did he fare? Not so good. His approval rating tanked to less than 40% for the first time and his second term was forever stained by how poorly he managed the response to Hurricane Katrina. Why do some leaders shine during the crisis and others wither away? When faced with a crisis, we like leaders who fearlessly take charge of the situation, who assume FULL responsibility for the efforts without wasting time to blame anyone else, who are VISIBLE in the trenches. In short, we like leaders who are in control because that makes us feel like we are in control of our lives.
