Only ONE of the really interesting things I learned from Valerie Moody this weekend is this: Do you realize that God asking Jonah to preach repentance Nineveh would be the equivalent of God asking a Jew to go into Nazi headquarters and preach repentance? You see, the Ninevites were from the kingdom of Assyria and they were a ruthless people who tortured their prisoners and demanded unspeakable things of their warriors. There are historical records to back up the terrible acts they performed. Things like cutting off the hands and feet of their prisoners, or making a totem pole with the decapitations performed. They would cut off noses and ears and feed them to the wild dogs that would follow the warriors around. Sometimes the last thing a tortured, dying prisoner would see was their body parts being fed to the dogs. Now it makes so much more sense why Jonah was so reluctant and rebellious about taking this mission.
