Only a few million pictures were taken in the 80 years before the first commercial camera was introduced. By 1930, about a billion photos were taken a year. Today, in the digital era, we take more than 380 billion photos a year. This makes me wonder: how can you still make a difference as a photographer; and a less egocentric question: how can a photo still make a difference? To answer these questions and to give the photos I make a bit more context, I started a series of essays on the value of photography. Well, they really are flawed sketches that do not per se answer these questions, but they may be provocative enough to clarify your own thoughts about the value of a photo. Any personal thoughts are welcome, of course! The first essay, Epitaph of a Moment, is all about what makes a photo a good photo. dephoid/essays
