Only in Brazil! Real life chimpanzee running for presidential election! True story. Back in 1988, after a hoax created by a popular magazine in Brazil in defence of the peoples right to a blank ballot, Tiao, a chimpanzee from Rio de Janeiros Zoo, was named as an unofficial candidate running for Rio de Janeiro. It is estimated that Tiao received over 400 thousand votes, reaching third place in the election! Unfortunately, all votes cast for Tiao were considered null as he was not recognized by the Regional Electoral Court as a real candidate. Brazilians continue to vote for Tiao until the government replace the voting ballots to an electronic voting machine in 1996 where voters would have to type in a number associated to the registered candidates instead of writing a name on the ballot. Tiao has earned his place in the Guinness World Record as the most voted animal in the planet!
