Only just heard about the passing of Idris Muhammed,one of the greatest drummers of recent decades. O.k. we can celebrate his crossover work as a leader in the seventies on Kudu and Fantasy, or his pioneering funk stylings for the Prestige label, but for me it was as the pulse behind Pharoah Sanders seminal groups of the eighties and nineties that Idris reached the zenith of his career. I feel blessed to have seen him with Pharaoh on several occasions. He was a truly musical drummer who had a great command of colour, light and shade in his playing, yes he could lay down a heavy funk groove, or swing with the best of them, but maybe we should just remember him as the drummer who could always summon the spirit, the roots and the source… youtube/watch?v=87MBDAniayo
