Oooh I wanna do a super long post as well, so Im going to cover some social issues you may face. Mainly three that people seem to care the most about. Im a commuter, I wont be able to make friends/go to events. Downtown is pretty scary, I dont want to walk alone. Where will I find time to hang out when I have so many classes? So the first one is the most common. In my opinion everyone SHOULD have the ability to stay on campus if they really wanted. You might end up staying late or even overnight sometimes, but once in a while thats A-Okay. Finding friends isnt hard either. Go to orientation, Welcome Week, and even classes and meet some people. During labs is a great time because you can interact and ask questions most of the time (and its a big help when you dont understand something right before a quiz). Going to events is a little trickier because you dont always get to influence the scheduled time for it. However most events at Ryerson are announced at least a week or two before, so you can plan it out, even if you have to skip a class occasionally. Under 19? You can still go to bar nights at the Ram in the Rye and have a LOT of fun. Downtown is definitely scary, especially if you feel vulnerable or are not accustomed to the city. In my opinion here, Toronto is quite safe with people all over and lights pretty much everywhere. If you still feel unsafe there are a selection of things I do. For one (this one I actually dont do) you can get security to walk you around campus pretty much 24/7 and to and from Dundas Station. There are also many passages I use to actually say inside instead of walking building to building outside. Second floor of the podium building is a bridge thatll take you to the second floor of Kerr Hall and theres a bridge at the southeast second floor has a bridge to the Rogers Communication Center. You can also go straight from Dundas Station to the DSQ classes using some escalators. If you need to walk down to Union then you can go to Dundas Station and walk down the PATH (I can give you directions later if you need it) and thatll take you straight to Union walking underground. bonus about this is there are no hagglers or homeless people and there is security down there in every building. I recommend just finding a group of people that commute the same way as you, and coordinate a time that you will all meet up and walk around if you dont want to take this advice. Finding time to hang out with friends in between classes. This was the hardest for me, I eventually ended up skipping so many classes and had no idea what we were doing in a lot of them. Dont do that (at least not often hahaha). The way to do it is to pick a time ahad of time that you will spend time with friends and just ask who else is free during that time. You may find a lot of people in your program are free the same times as you, and then youll occasionally see friends from other programs. This may become a habit (repetitive) or a one time thing. The real thing is you have to TRY, not just expect it to happen on its own.
