Open House Chicago 2014: Airstream Building Dan Williams - clarinet Jon Cegys - bass Jeff Morris - composer Many CTA Brown Line riders are familiar with—and probably curious about—the classic silver 1960s Airstream trailer perched atop the roof of this office building. The former industrial building was renovated in 1989 to house Chicago Associates Planners & Architects, a design cooperative led by architect Edward Noonan. Looking to add a whimsical amenity for building tenants, Noonan asked the city for permission to hoist the trailer onto the roof—and was laughed out of the zoning office. With a rented crane, the trailer was lifted onto the roof, drawing an emergency response when the CTA mistook it for a derailed Brown Line train. In the years since, the Airstream conference center (complete with rooftop deck and skyline views) has hosted numerous events and parties. Behind the Scenes Access: Climb to the rooftop deck to take in the skyline views, then step inside the vintage Airstream trailer. ***************** Presented by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, Open House Chicago is a free, city-wide, behind-the-scenes look at many of the city’s great places and spaces. 150 buildings are chosen each year and include repurposed mansions, hidden rooms, sacred spaces, private clubs, iconic theaters, offices, hotels and more—all for free. Since its inception in 2011, Access Contemporary Music has worked with the Architecture Foundation to activate four of the sites with music by commissioning composers to write music inspired by the spaces. We then have musicians in the spaces performing the music approximately every fifteen minutes during the day. _______ FOLLOW LIPSapp Hits56 Radio _______ FB: r-js/1uOEA6Y / TW: r-js/1us3SdS / Listen to LIPSapp Hits56 Radio r-js/1imT49y #thewho #beatles #elvis #jimihendrix #dylan
