Open Society Foundations’ Grant for ‘Affordable Access to Digital Communications Initiative’ As the world advances with new technologies of communication, there are still challenges in many countries in accessing, affording and using them for ultimately leading to better governance. The Open Society Foundations’ grant for ‘Affordable Access to Digital Communications Initiative’ aims “to broaden affordable access to communications networks in Africa and other strategically important countries in the South by supporting policy analysis, policy interventions and the staging of new models.” The program has two priorities: Affordable Access to Mobile Phone: As the poor continue to spend more and more money on mobile connectivity, it is important to reduce its cost. OSF funding would support advocacy efforts for keeping the costs of mobile usage low. Spectrum Reform: This program supports NGOs “to advocate for the dynamic use of spectrum enabled by cognitive radio, a technology with the potential to open up access to low-cost, high-speed internet across Africa. The short-term goal is to obtain government approval for national-level pilot projects.” OSF is interested to receive applications for funding from new partners. However, before submitting a proposal, all applicants are advised to submit a one-page concept note outlining their project. For more information, visit this link.
