Open de Espana Betting Preview and Tips Favourites There’s only favourite for this event and that’s Sergio Garcia who brings serious form back to Spain this week. Since winning in Qatar, Sergio was T8 at The Honda, 3rd in Houston and 3rd again last time out at Sawgrass. Just too unbackable pre-tournament at 11/2 for me. Poor old Anders Hansen who I really thought could also do well this week tells me his right hand is now playing tricks after he had surgery on his left and he’s forced to miss out. Top Five To Watch Francesco Molinari 14/1 I really feel strongly that Francesco Molinari can win this week or next. Great recent form with a T6 at Bay Hill, solo 4th in China and T6 last time out at The Players. Twice a winner in the first week in May, in 2006 at the Open d’Italia and at the 2012 Open de Espana when staged in Seville. Tied 11th last time the event was staged here at PGA Catalunya. Get on board! David Horsey 50/1 Very impressed with David so far this season, he’s such a top player when he hits form. Two top 10’s in Africa were followed by another at the Hassan II and good solid performances in Sotogrande and China. Wherever the Open de Espana has been staged over the past few years, and it’s a long list, Horsey has done very well with bests including a T5 at El Prat in 2011 and a T4 last year at El Parador. Top 10’d too last time the event was played here in 2009. Mike Hoey 66/1 With his card pretty much secure I fancy my Tour diarist Mike Hoey for a big performance this week. Since his T2 at the Tshwane, Mike has a T30 at the Hassan, T18 in tough conditions in Malaysia and an excellent T8 in China last time out. Mike’s also a May winner (in 2009) and I love May winners! Felipe Aguilar 50/1 Very generous odds on the winner last time out at Laguna National (if you haven’t seen the video, you won’t believe how he won) at 50/1. A super character, Felipe once told me when he started out on Tour he used to book crappy hotels. Then when he decided as an experiment to book the same hotels as the top players, he started to play much better! No problem booking the good ones now! T2 at El Parador in 2013. Andy Sullivan 66/1 Great start to the season by Andy with that T5 in Joburg and solo second at the Hassan. Then scored a T8 in China and T13 in Malaysia although he’ll be disappointed with his final round there. Knows Catalunya like the back of his hand having made it through the Q school in style here in 2012 and 2011. Long Odds Shots Paul Waring 125/1 has two top six finishes in the last three years at the Open de Espana and when in the mood can contend. Recent best of T8 at the Trophee Hassan. Carlos del Moral 125/1 was a standout Q school finisher here in 2010 who has a solo fourth already this season at the Tshwane Open. Recent best of T20 in Sotogrande. Alejandro Canizares 66/1 and higher on some sites has missed his last three cuts since winning the Trophee Hassan. He tied second in Seville in 2012. Mikael Lundberg 300/1 has seen this place more than most at Q school, but is a serial performer here. And of course in Russia! You never know.
