Open house this Thursday, January 23 from 5 - 6 p.m. for the new exhibit in Doyle Library titled, Saving our Synthetic Seas located on the 2nd floor in the south wing. Speakers will include: • Shirlee Zane, Sonoma County Supervisor, District 3 • Carolynn Box, 5 Gyres Institute • David Bannister, Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation • Denny Rosatti, Sonoma County Conservation Action • Jessica Jones, Sierra Club, Redwood Chapter & SRJC student Saving our Synthetic Seas is a traveling exhibit created by the 5-Gyres Institute. It tells the story about science, through art and personal experience about the lives of people impacted by plastic pollution, from scientists at sea, to waste-pickers in India, and all the way to Japan where tsunami survivors shift through mountains of debris. The exhibit includes materials collected on research expeditions, including 150 pounds of netting, a boat from the Japanese Tsunami, and water samples from the major ocean gyres. The highlight of the exhibit includes several unique pieces of art made from plastic. Santa Rosa Junior College Library
