Opening to life. Life is an unfolding process. In it we can often experience much pleasure. Being with loved ones, feeling happy with our circumstances and generally being at ease. Through our practice of insight and loving kindness meditation we are able to enjoy these things while they last but not despair when they change. Nothing lasts forever, and as long as we cling to pleasant conditions, we will all be subject to disappointment and pain when they change. Life is also subject to many painful conditions and events. The ending of a relationship, the death of a loved one, or just the general feelings of stress, anxiety and unhappiness, are experiences all of us will have to bear. But these two, viewed through the eyes of wisdom can be seen as objects for reflection. Everything that begins must end. This is a universal law, and wisdom means to understand this at the intuitive level. Once we have wisdom, we are able to live within the changing and uncontrolled conditions of life in a calm and balanced way. Having the openness to enjoy what can be enjoyed, and the fortitude to endure that which has to be endured. Seeing everything as clouds passing through a perfect sky, sometimes obscuring the sun, but always moving on. We need to ask ourselves what is the result of my spiritual efforts? What is the fruit of my practice? If our life is not becoming easier and happier we are doing something wrong, we are still caught in the trap of trying to make everything perfect for ourselves and blaming other people and conditions when things dont go our way. With this view, we are dividing our life. We are struggling with life. We are the victim of life, because we have no real control of our own. Allow everything to act in accordance with its nature and be easy. When we let go of struggle peace arises. We dont need to create it within ourselves, we only have to allow the obstacles to it fall away. Nothing is an obstacle to practice and so nothing is outside it. In every moment the opportunity for spiritual development is presenting itself. May all beings be happy
