Opera for the Weekend: Happy Holidays, everybody. Today in 1831, Vincenzo Bellinis opera Norma premiered in Milan. A tragedia lirica in two acts, it is based on Norma, ossia Linfanticidio (Norma, or The Infanticide), a play by by Alexandre Soumet. The opera, regarded as a leading example of the bel canto genre, is best known because of its famous soprano aria, Casta diva, made popular in the twentieth century by Maria Callas.
