Operation Christmas Child Sunday is this Sunday, November 17th. All children grades 1st-5th will be bringing shoeboxes into sanctuary during offering time in both services. Parents, consider helping us escort the children to and from the main foyer and passing out shoeboxes to children. 5th and 6th Graders are invited to help serve in the collection center at CBC from 12:00-3:30 this Sunday, Nov. 17th. Please let me or Teresa King know by Nov. 16 if your 5th or 6th grader will be staying to help. Lunch will be provided. This week Children’s Church was a little more active than usual, between two lively games and learning motions to Amazing Grace (rap version) and Ten Thousand Reasons. But there were a lot of good lessons that came out of our activity. The first game taught us that we need to listen to God and read the Bible to avoid sinning. The game took an unplanned turn to teach another lesson: Our last set of participants, Taylor and Faith, demonstrated taking a step of faith through this game. Then we did a broad overview of the Old Testament from Creation to the Divided Kingdom. Our last game demonstrated God’s intention of gathering us all back together to be with Him. Even though the Israelites had sinned and lost their kingdom, God was not finished. Jesus would provide a way back. In Sunday School, over the next four weeks, our Bible stories will focus on four prophets whose messages to God’s people foreshadowed Jesus Christ. In this week’s Bible story, Amos was a regular, hard-working man who raised sheep in the Southern Kingdom of Judah. God called Amos to prophesy to the people of Israel. On the outside, the Northern Kingdom of Israel looked good. They were prospering economically, their borders were expanding, and sure, King Jeroboam was an evil and ungodly man, but he could have been worse. But God was not pleased with His people. Their hearts were far from Him. They ignored God’s laws, worshiped idols, and mistreated the poor. They were greedy, hypocritical, and prideful. So God called Amos to tell Israel that God was going to judge them for their sin. Taking God’s message to the people of Israel was no easy task. When Amos told Israel through three sermons that God’s judgment would also fall on them, they told him to go away. The Israelites’ refusal to turn back to God eventually led to their exile and brought an end to their time of prosperity. God is holy and just, but He is also loving and gracious. God wanted His people to turn back to Him, but they refused. Israel faced the punishment for their sin. God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sin. God accepts anyone who trusts in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Family Time: Lesson Title: Amos, Prophet to Israel Bible Passage: Amos 1-9 Key Passage for the Month: “I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.” Jonah 4:2 Big Picture Question: How does God deal with sin? God is gracious and patient, but He will punish sin. Christ Connection: God is holy and just, but He is also loving and gracious. God wanted His people to turn back to Him, but they refused. Israel faced the punishment for their sin. God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sin. God accepts anyone who trusts in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Family Activity: Encourage each family member to intentionally do something nice for someone. It can be a friend, family member, or neighbor. You may even choose to do something as a family. Talk about how God wants His people to treat each other fairly, something those living in Israel were not doing during the time of Amos. Share your experiences. Next Sunday’s lesson: Hosea 1-14; How does Hosea remind us of God? Blessings, Kathy Bowman
